The Dos and Don’ts to Vaping
Here’s a quick list of the dos and don’ts that come along with vaping. This list will guide beginners and those that need a quick reminder. It might seem like there’s a lot to learn, but with these great tips you’re enjoy a better vaping experience every time.
The ‘Dos’ to Vaping
Keep It Clean
The tank builds up residue that can affect the quality and flavour of your e-liquids.
Keeping your device clean is a number one rule. Clean the mouthpiece daily and wipe any residue from your tank and connections. As a rule, clean the tank when you change your e-liquid, by completely washing it in warm water.
Clean or Change the Coils
As the coil inside your device vaporises the e-liquid it slowly burns out the cotton that the e-liquid saturates as well. You will usually be able to tell when your coil is on the way out as the flavour may taste quite unpleasant and will need to be changed to keep your e-liquid tasting great and to ensure your tank works at its best.
Store the Liquid Safely
E-liquid has a long shelf life but can still lose its effectiveness and flavour, if not kept in proper conditions. Keep your e-liquid in a dark, cool place and it will last longer. Sunlight, heat, and higher temperatures can cause it to change colour and taste.
Different Styles of Vaping
Knowing which style of vape experience you prefer will help you choose devices, coils, and accessories. Every vape setup gives you a mouth-to-lung (MTL) or a direct-to-lung (DL) vaping experience. Those that switch to vaping from cigarettes prefer an MTL experience since that’s what cigarettes deliver. These devices usually produce smaller clouds and what vapers call a “throat hit.” If you prefer vapor that goes directly to your lungs, choose a DL setup. These devices usually produce intense flavour and large clouds.
Get in the Habit of Proper Oral Hygiene
There are various ways vaping can have a negative impact on oral hygiene. In many instances, vaping can lead to the need for dental procedures that could otherwise have been avoided with good oral hygiene. It can lead to serious issues such as bacteria in the mouth, teeth decay and mouth ulcers if not taken care of. Along with brushing your teeth, remember to use a mouth wash as vaping can lead to a dry mouth which therefore can result in bad breath. Brushing your tongue is always a good idea this will remove the build of e-liquid flavours and using a good mouth wash afterwards too.
A hydrated mouth will keep your mouth from becoming dry and help you maintain your dental health. In addition, brushing and flossing twice a day can be a positive step in minimising your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disorders.
Experiment With PG/VG Ratio
Propylene Glycol (PG) is used to provide a ‘throat hit’ and Vegetable Glycerine (VG) is used in e-liquid to give a ‘thick’ sensation to vapor. VG has a slightly sweet taste and is considerably thicker than PG. You can opt for a 50/50 ratio to get a balance between flavour and cloud thickness.
Know your ratios
Finding out your preferred ratios is something all vapers have to go through at the beginning. Higher Vegetable Glycerine (VG) liquids have smoother sensations and thicker clouds, but lower PG gives a better throat hit and flavour delivery. High VG e-liquids produce thicker smoke and smoother hits. Low VG e-liquids creates smaller clouds and a deeper “throat hit”. So, depending on the cloud effect and flavour you’re wanting to achieve, you’ll need to decide your preference.
Watch Your Nicotine Levels If You Want to Quit Smoking
When you’re vaping to quit smoking, you need to choose an e-liquid with nicotine. This will give you the nicotine fix to stop the cravings, without the toxins from burning tobacco. However, you should gradually decrease over time if you wish to quit smoking.
Get Permission Before You Vape
Most people are fine with vaping, especially if you use a discreet device. Direct the smoke in the away from people, so you’re not hitting people in the face with your vapor.
In public places like airports, office buildings and even some restaurants, you may have to follow the same rules as smokers. Most smoking bans include e-cigarettes and vapes. Even if you go outside, check that you’re in a designated spot. Some laws require smokers and vapers to stay a certain distance from the entrance.
Don’ts
Here are the top things to avoid.
Don’t Charge Your Device Overnight
Most vaping dangers happen when you mishandle the device’s batteries. One of the worst things you can do is overcharge it. This can cause it to explode, catch on fire or kill the battery. Many devices come with built-in overcharge protection, but you can’t rely on this. Overcharging can cause even this protection to fail. Charge the device or the batteries only when you’re awake and your device is insight. Make sure you stay close by so you can unplug the device once the charge is full. You can buy vape kits with overcharge protection to prevent damage to the device.
Don’t Charge It with Your Phone or Laptop
Only use a high-quality, specially designated charging equipment that came with your device. If it came with a cord only, hook that up to the wall with a USB plug.
This is because, each device runs on its own voltage, and using the wrong voltage could damage your vape. Never charge it with a laptop, phone, or tablet because you could damage those devices as well.
Don’t Make Big Clouds
Most people don’t mind if you vape around them, but nobody appreciates huge clouds in their face. If you’re in a bar or restaurant, don’t fill up the space with your vapor. Be courteous and go outside or use a device that makes smaller clouds when you’re in public places, look out for signs first if you can vape in the place that you are in.
Don’t Vape Around Children & Pets
Vaping around children is a mistake for several reasons. Most importantly you don’t know how the vapor will affect their health, and their parents may not appreciate having their children exposed to it.
Don’t Let Children and Pets Near Your E-liquids
If your e-juices contain high levels of nicotine, can be poisonous if it’s consumed directly due to their concentrated levels. The sweet flavours of these e-juices can make them attractive to children and pets but eating the juice can be harmful if ingested. Keep your e-liquids in a safe place is a must.
Forget to Drink Water
Vapers often experience their mouth getting dry. Being hydrated, you will be less likely to experience a vaper’s tongue. The main ingredients of e-liquids are Propylene Glycol which are naturally dehydrating. This easily absorbs water molecules that can deprive your body of the water it needs. That’s why you need to drink more water than usual.
Chain Vaping is a No
Those that are new to vaping and have switched from smoking cigarettes, tend to chain vape or puff multiple drags in a short span of time. This can burn your coils and harm your device faster and could also cause dry hits. The best tip would be to let your wicks saturate to reduce the possibility of a dry hit. The general rule is to wait 15 to 30 seconds before puffing again. If you are trying to quit smoking, 30 seconds can be a long wait. What you can do is buy an e-liquid with a higher nicotine level, giving you a satisfying and strong nicotine supply to your body so that you will not be tempted to take another hit before 30 seconds is up.
Common Sense and Courtesy
These rules are mainly to do with safety precautions and respect for others. When being considerate of other people around you, you’ll know what to do in most situations as you practice these rules. Just make sure that you are using the proper vaping device and know how to take care of it and be considerate of your environment as you vape.
