What’s inside an E-liquid?

Over the past few years vaping has gone from an alternative to smoking to a cultural pastime and it shows no sign of slowing down. Its meteoric rise has given way to countless shops and online stores selling e-liquids or ‘smoke juice’, as it’s often referred to. But if you are new to vaping, you may be uncertain of what the liquid is made up of so here is a guide to what is inside virtually all of the juices.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

This is a common organic compound used in everyday products from skincare to medication and it is also used as an additive in thousands of food items. Within the e-liquid, Propylene Glycol is used to form the base to create the vapour and to provide the formidable hit to the throat that comes with vaping. PG is colourless, odourless and tasteless and has had extensive tests and research confirming its safe use for countless products.

Vegetable Glycerine (VG)

Similar to PG, vegetable glycerine is used as a base to e-liquids and as it’s derived from plant oils, it is completely safe to use. As VG is thicker, it can produce more vapour but won’t provide as much of a throaty hit as PG. What many e-liquid manufacturers will do is combine both PG and VG to get the best of both worlds from them and intensify the vaping experience.

This stimulant, which is found in tobacco leaves, can be highly addictive but it has become the bad poster child for cigarettes when in fact it is only part of what makes smoking so unhealthy. So whilst nicotine can have some mild side effects, the good thing about e-liquids is that the level of nicotine consumed can be controlled and also reduced over time. Also not all e-liquids contain nicotine so this is something that can be avoided all together.

Distilled Water

This is used in some e-liquids to dilute the consistency of the fluid, particularly when vegetable glycerine is a main base ingredient. It helps to counteract its thickness and ensure there is no product build up whilst vaping.

Added Flavours

Perhaps the most fun part and what has helped produce the widespread use of vaping, is the multitude of flavours that can be added to e-liquids and produce a variety of vaping options. The particular ingredients of the flavours will vary between each vaping brand however most of these will be made from naturally occurring food additives. It is just a case of experimenting with the selection of flavours on offer and picking which one(s) you like best.
