Nicotine Strengths: Which is for you?

If you want to go from smoking to vaping, making sure you choose the correct dose of nicotine in your device is a big part of having the transition go smoothly. If you don’t get the nicotine hit, you’re used to from cigarettes when you first start vaping, there’s a chance you’ll go back to smoking. As a result, the nicotine strength of an e-liquid is an important consideration when purchasing it. The proper strength of e liquid will also help you choose the right PG/VG blend and vape kit, so finding this out first is a great place to start your vaping journey.

What is nicotine?

Nicotine is a chemical substance produced by the tobacco plant. Nicotine is an alkaloid, which means it includes nitrogen. Nicotine can be found in small amounts in potatoes, tomatoes, and aubergine, in addition to the tobacco plant. To compare, 1g of tobacco contains approximately 20mg of nicotine, whereas 1g of aubergine contains only 0.0001mg.

Nicotine is an optional additional in e-liquid, and most of them come in strengths from 0mg, 10mg to 20mg. Nicotine is present in e-liquid to aid in the management of cravings after quitting smoking.

How much e-liquid is equivalent to smoking a cigarette?

This is a common question, but it’s difficult to answer because it depends on the intensity of the cigarettes you used to smoke, how many you smoked each day, your smoking style, and even your body mass and lung capacity.

All of this would have to be considered against the nicotine dosage in your e-liquid as well as your vaping style. To give you an idea the average cigarette contains 12mg of nicotine (though this can range from 8mg to 20mg), but only a small portion of this is absorbed by your body; the rest is exhaled back out. Similarly, vaping does not deliver nicotine to your system as quickly as smoking does. It’s like coffee and alcohol in that what one person considers normal may be too much or too little for another. Previously in the UK, the law for the maximum amount of nicotine allowed in an e-liquid was 24 milligrams per millilitre, but this was cut to 20 milligrams per millilitre following intense debate and medical advice.

What nicotine strength is right for you?

The most significant factor in answering this question is your smoking habits. Consider how many cigarettes you smoke per day, whether they were light or not, and go from there. The strength of the liquid you use is entirely up to you; a stronger liquid may assist you in making the transition from smoking to vaping, and after you’ve found the correct one, you can progressively lessen the strength over time. Another advantage of going for a lower strength is that you can vape till you’re satisfied rather than having a heavy hit.

The different strengths of nicotine are;

0mg nicotine: The nicotine-free alternative is great for social smokers who just have the occasional cigarette while they’re out and only want to enjoy the sensation of smoking, or for those who want to dilute their nicotine-containing juice to make it a little milder. It’s also for enthusiasts who simply like blowing vapour rings and performing the Irish Waterfall in the comfort of their own house.

3mg nicotine: This is the lowest nicotine concentration available in a liquid (unless you mix it yourself with some 0mg to dilute it). It’s frequently the best last step for smokers who have decreased their intake to nearly nil. This concentration is also recommended for light smokers who only smoke a few cigarettes each day.

6mg nicotine: Although it has a low nicotine content, it will still provide you with the nicotine high you need, similar to what you’d get from certain Ultra Low/Ultra-Light cigarettes. This one is for those of you who consume roughly 10 per day, though depending on the strength of what you’re used to, the 3mg might be a better fit.

12mg nicotine: Made for the average smoker who consumes up to a pack of cigarettes each day. It’s a terrific place to start if you’re new to vaping, and it’ll satisfy your cravings for a while.

18mg / 20mg nicotine: This is the highest nicotine dosage for people who smoke a lot of cigarettes, exceeding a pack per day. Because not all vapes are created equal, the intensity of the juice you’ll require will determine the type of device you’ll need. Nicotine salts, which are also used in disposable vape pens, contain 20 mg of nicotine.
